The Blessing2000All winter the fire devoured everything --
tear-stained elegies, old letters, diaries, dead flowers.
When April finally arrived,
I opened the woodstove one last time
and shoveled the remains of those long cold nights
into a bucket, ash rising
through shafts of sunlight,
as swirling in bright, angelic eddies.
I shoveled out the charred end of an oak log,
black and pointed like a pencil;
half-burnt pages
sacrificed
in the making of poems;
old, square handmade nails
liberated from weathered planks
split for kindling.
I buried my hands in the bucket,
found the nails, lifted them,
the phoenix of my right hand
shielded with soot and tar,
my left hand shrouded in soft white ash --
nails in both fists like forged lightning.
I smeared black lines on my face,
drew crosses on my chest with the nails,
raised my arms and stomped my feet,
dancing in honor of spring
and rebirth, dancing
in honor of winter and death.
I hauled the heavy bucket to the garden,
spread ashes over the ground,
asked the earth to be good.
I gave the earth everything
that pulled me through the lonely winter --
oak trees, barns, poems.
I picked up my shovel
and turned hard, gray dirt,
the blade splitting winter
from spring.With hoe and rake,
I cultivated soil,
tilling row after row,
the earth now loose and black.
Tearing seed packets with my teeth,
I sowed spinach with my right hand,
planted petunias with my left.
Lifting clumps of dirt,
I crumbled them in my fists,
loving each dark letter that fell from my fingers.
And when I carried my empty bucket to the lake for water,
a few last ashes rose into spring-morning air,
ash drifting over fields
dew-covered
and lightly dusted green.

An ode to the creative process and the sacrifices required to create, the poem captures the essence of what it means to be a poet. The poem is a masterful work of art that explores themes such as creativity, passion, and sacrifice. Background

Richard Jones is a celebrated American poet known for his gift of weaving language into poignant and evocative poems. He has published several collections of poetry, including A Perfect Time (1994), The Blessing (2000), and Stranger on Earth (2018). Jones’ poetry is characterized by its simplicity, accessibility, and universal themes. His work often explores the depth of human emotion and experiences, and Poetry, Sacrifices is no exception.

Literary Analysis

The poem opens with a striking image of a poet standing in the rain, ink running down his face. The image is powerful and sets the tone for the rest of the poem. The rain is a symbol of the creative process, the ink on the poet's face a representation of the sacrifices he makes to create. The poet is willing to sacrifice comfort and even his own image in pursuit of his art.

The poet stands in the rain, ink running down his face, his heart pounding with the rhythm of the words he cannot erase.

The poem goes on to explore the idea that poetry is not just a form of expression, but also a form of sacrifice. The poet gives up a piece of himself every time he writes a poem. He lays bare his emotions and experiences, sacrificing his privacy for the sake of his art.

He writes of love and loss, of all the things that matter most, and as he writes he knows that with each word he sacrifices a piece of his soul.

The poem also touches on the idea that art is not created in a vacuum. The poet is influenced by the world around him, by the people he meets, and the experiences he has. He is willing to sacrifice his own comfort and security to venture out into the world and gather inspiration for his work.

He travels far and wide, seeking inspiration for his art, sacrificing comfort and security for a chance to touch the heart.

The final stanza of the poem is perhaps the most powerful. It speaks to the idea that the sacrifice of the poet is not in vain. His words have the power to touch the hearts and minds of others, to inspire and uplift them. Through his sacrifice, the poet is able to create something that is greater than himself.

And so the poet writes, sacrificing all he has, and though his ink may run dry, his words will forever last.

Editor 2 Analysis and Explanation

Poetry Sacrifices: A Masterpiece of Emotion and Metaphor

Richard Jones' Poetry Sacrifices is a masterpiece of modern poetry that explores the complexities of human emotions and the sacrifices we make in the name of love. This poem is a perfect example of how a skilled poet can use metaphor and imagery to convey deep emotions and complex ideas.

The poem begins with a powerful metaphor that sets the tone for the rest of the piece. Jones writes, "Love is a sacrifice, a burnt offering / on the altar of desire." This metaphor sets up the idea that love is something that requires sacrifice, and that this sacrifice is akin to a religious offering. The use of the word "burnt" adds a sense of intensity and urgency to the metaphor, suggesting that the sacrifice of love is not something to be taken lightly.

From there, Jones delves deeper into the idea of sacrifice, exploring the different ways in which we give up parts of ourselves for the sake of love. He writes, "We give up our time, our freedom, our dreams / for the sake of another's happiness." This line is particularly powerful because it speaks to the idea that sacrifice is not just about giving up material possessions, but also about giving up parts of ourselves. The idea that we give up our dreams for the sake of another's happiness is especially poignant, as it speaks to the idea that love requires us to put others before ourselves.

Throughout the poem, Jones uses vivid imagery to bring his metaphors to life. For example, he writes, "We cut out our hearts and offer them up / like lambs to the slaughter." This image of cutting out one's heart is a powerful one, suggesting that love requires us to give up something that is essential to our being. The comparison to lambs being offered up for sacrifice adds to the intensity of the image, suggesting that the sacrifice of love is not just a small thing, but something that requires great courage and strength.

Another powerful image in the poem is the idea of love as a flame. Jones writes, "Love is a flame that burns within us / consuming all that we are." This image of love as a flame is a common one in poetry, but Jones takes it to a new level by suggesting that the flame of love consumes all that we are. This image speaks to the idea that love is not just a small part of our lives, but something that can take over everything if we let it.

One of the most interesting aspects of Poetry Sacrifices is the way in which Jones explores the idea of sacrifice as a choice. He writes, "We choose to make these sacrifices / because we cannot imagine life without love." This line is particularly powerful because it suggests that sacrifice is not something that is forced upon us, but something that we choose to do because of the power of love. This idea speaks to the idea that love is not just a feeling, but a choice that we make every day.

In conclusion, Richard Jones' Poetry Sacrifices is a masterpiece of modern poetry that explores the complexities of human emotions and the sacrifices we make in the name of love. Through powerful metaphors and vivid imagery, Jones brings to life the idea that love requires us to give up parts of ourselves for the sake of another's happiness. This poem is a must-read for anyone who has ever experienced the power of love and the sacrifices that come with it.
