Speaking of sunsets,
last night's was shocking.
I mean, sunsets aren't supposed to frighten you, are they?
Well, this one was terrifying.
People were screaming in the streets.
Sure, it was beautiful, but far too beautiful.
It wasn't natural.
One climax followed another and then another
until your knees went weak
and you couldn't breathe.
The colors were definitely not of this world,
peaches dripping opium,
pandemonium of tangerines,
inferno of irises,
Plutonian emeralds,
all swirling and churning, swabbing,
like it was playing with us,
like we were nothing,
as if our whole lives were a preparation for this,
this for which nothing could have prepared us
and for which we could not have been less prepared.
The mockery of it all stung us bitterly.
And when it was finally over
we whimpered and cried and howled.
And then the streetlights came on as always
and we looked into one another's eyes?
ancient caves with still pools
and those little transparent fish
who have never seen even one ray of light.
And the calm that returned to us
was not even our own.

Never Again The Same by James Tate

Are you ready to dive into the world of James Tate's Never Again The Same? Buckle up and get ready to be taken on a poetic journey full of captivating metaphors, vivid imagery, and powerful emotions.

At first glance, Never Again The Same may seem like a simple poem about a man watching a bird fly away. However, as you delve deeper into the poem, you'll realize that the bird represents so much more. It symbolizes the fleeting nature of life, the inevitability of change, and the bittersweet nostalgia that comes with memories.

The opening lines of the poem set the tone for what's to come:

Two-legged. And the wings spread out behind his shoulders are beautiful, but useless, like a memory of wings.

Right off the bat, Tate uses the bird's wings as a metaphor for memories. Memories are beautiful and can take us to different places, but they're also useless because they can never be relived. This metaphor sets the stage for the rest of the poem, which is all about the speaker's memories and the emotions they evoke.

As the poem progresses, we learn that the speaker is watching the bird fly away, and he knows that he will never see it again. This inevitability of never seeing the bird again is a metaphor for the inevitability of change. Just as the bird flies away and can never be retrieved, life is constantly changing, and we can never go back to the way things were before.

The lines, "I used to think power was in my body/ but it's not" are particularly powerful because they show the speaker's self-realization. He used to think that he had control over his life, but he now realizes that life is full of unknowns and uncertainties. This realization is a universal truth that we all come to at some point in our lives.

But despite the sadness and nostalgia that comes with memories, the speaker still finds beauty in the moment:

The bird folds his wings and glides down to the perfect black water, and plunges in, and when he emerges again he shakes himself and flutters away into the black branches of the overhanging trees.

In this moment, the speaker is able to appreciate the beauty of the bird's flight and the natural world around him. He finds solace in the fact that, even though the bird is gone, it's still a part of the world and will continue to live on in its own way.

Never Again The Same is a powerful reminder that life is fleeting and that we should appreciate the beauty of the moment. It's a poem that speaks to the human experience and the emotions that come with it. James Tate's use of metaphors and vivid imagery makes this poem a true masterpiece that will leave you feeling both melancholic and inspired.

In conclusion, Never Again The Same is a must-read for anyone who appreciates poetry and the human experience. It's a reminder that life is full of beauty and that we should cherish every moment we have. So, take a moment to read this poem and let it take you on a journey of self-reflection and appreciation. You won't be disappointed.
