Where lies the land to which the ship would go?

Far, far ahead, is all her seamen know.

And where the land she travels from? Away,

Far, far behind, is all that they can say.

On sunny noons upon the deck's smooth face,

Linked arm in arm, how pleasant here to pace!

Or, o'er the stern reclining, watch below

The foaming wake far widening as we go.

On stormy nights while wild north-westers rave,

How proud a thing to fight with wind and wave!

The dripping sailor on the reeling mast

Exults to bear, and scorns to wish it past.

Where lies the land to which the ship would go?

Far, far ahead, is all her seamen know.

And where the land she travels from? Away,

Far, far behind, is all that they can say.

Clough also emphasizes that life is all about planing ea: \" where lies the land to which the ship would go? Far, far ahead, is all her seamen know.\" Which means ahead is the future.

Arthur Clough talks about life. The sea is Eternity and the ship symbolizes our journey through life- the land we have left behind being the time, and the land before us being the future. both are unknown to us and yet we go on in life facing it bravely when the times are tough and enjoying life when the days are good.
It is an allegory.
I personally do not like this poem. I find Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening which is also an allegory to be so much better and beautiful!

In this poem, Clough emphasises the hardships of life, 'far, far ahead'. This suggests that no one is quite sure what the future holds for us. However, Clough goes on to show that living day by day brings joy to his life. As he is faced with difficulties, 'stormy nights', he still is 'proud to fight with wind and wave'. This is a very positive poem about life and it does not portray any kind of sadness as Clough keeps emphasising that whatever comes his way will have to be dealt with.
