The shattered water made a misty din.

Great waves looked over others coming in,

And thought of doing something to the shore

That water never did to land before.

The clouds were low and hairy in the skies,

Like locks blown forward in the gleam of eyes.

You could not tell, and yet it looked as if

The shore was lucky in being backed by cliff,

The cliff in being backed by continent;

It looked as if a night of dark intent

Was coming, and not only a night, an age.

Someone had better be prepared for rage.

There would be more than ocean-water broken

Before God's last Put out the light was spoken.

This poem is about the ocean taking over the land and people. The ocean is so strong that even if the cliffs, continents, etc. ally together, they won't be able to stop the water taking over the world. The poet personnifies the waves to explain that they are very mad and are showing this wrath by splashing onto shore. At the end of the poem, Frost asks who is behind all of this wrath and if it is God himself trying to wipe out humanity.

I think that he is reffering to a sexual experience and comparing it to a virgin when he talks about there would be more than ocean-water broken before God\'s last put out the light was spoken

i think the poem means that you should see what\'s infront of you and be ready because danger may strike anywhere even in the places that may look peaceful.

i personally think robert frost was talking about the ocean is at war with the land and saying the land is stronger because it is backed with clifts. thats why the land is still above water because the land is more powerful.

i think this poem is subject to personal interperatation. i see this as a reflection of what frost was feeling at the time. i htink this was written around when everyone he loved was dying... i see him as the land and the water as the forces of nature. the water is battering him and wearing him down but he has stayed strong. he can stand up to this and the water wont beat him. but he also feels he hasnt yet seen the worst and nature has more to throw at him.

I thought that this poem was more about God bring forth his wrath upon us. Which would make this poem apocalyptic. I also felt that it was more of how God had created us and nature and how he could take what we value least to turn against us and destroy.

all of you are complete idoits this poem isn't about sex at all or friends backing you up. this poem has many thmemes one being the creation of the earth and hiow it will be ended. In the line that reads "The clouds were low and hairy in the skies,Like locks blown forward in the gleam of eyes."
these lines show personification. like god creating adam and eve. as well as the waves will do something the have never done before means that after some terrible thing or divine evnt occurs god will do something he's supposedly never done berfore and will " put out the lights'.
this poem is about the begginging of the world being created and how something bad will be done and god will end the earth.

WoW Really?? Some people are too dumb to care about what is going in this poem. WOW! Hardened nipples? Grow Up!!!!

Oh, those americans! Even here you found sex, your nipples harden, orgasm... Can't you see a bit dipper, can't you feel anything else rather than sex? Don't you understand that message is be prepared for the worst,"there will be more than ocean water broken" before God will put off the light (light of your life)? Didn't you feel he talks about frienndship and its value, while talking about about shore that is lucky to be backed by cliff and cliff by continent? To be backed in this life is impoortant, think of this and not of yopur hardened nipples!
