O HYMEN! O hymenee!

Why do you tantalize me thus?

O why sting me for a swift moment only?

Why can you not continue? O why do you now cease?

Is it because, if you continued beyond the swift moment, you would

soon certainly kill me?

Is he using persona here, writing from a woman's perspective? "O why sting me...". Why msut this rite of passage be over? Yet, without the gate open, death via unsatisfied desire would soon follow?

I think it 's pretty clear. He loves the initial feel of a tight virgin-a feeling that diminishes as coitus continues. If she were to remain as tight throughout, he woul die of pleasure.

This is one of Whitman's shorter works and the meaning of it remains unknown. It may have to deal with Whitman growing old into the end stages of manhood, where he loses the ability to arouse his genitals. Dealing with this, Whitman asks "O Hymen! O Hymenee! Why do you tantalize me thus?" He is speaking to whatever higher power he believes in, looking for an answer to his erectile issues. He would rather choose death.
