I had no time to hate, because

The grave would hinder me,

And life was not so ample I

Could finish enmity.

Nor had I time to love, but since

Some industry must be,

The little toil of love, I thought,

Was large enough for me.

the fact that she is writing that \"[she] had no time to hate\" and to love does not mean that she was obsessing with her poetry. she was using negative capability. the same thing that Heath Ledger used in his acting (the ability to replace ones self with another to play a role or write a character) it is possible that she was remenissing on her life. but in the final two lines she says, \"i thought was large enough for me.\" \"i thought;\" note the past tense. she did not say i think as to say she is content with her current amount of love but rather to say that she no longer aggrees with her past thoughts.

I believe that this poem is about regreting the time she didn't have to hate or love and when she says that she "had no time", its as if she is saying that she is out of time as if she is about to die or is near death.

I would have to disagree with both of you regarding the feelings of regret. Perhaps there is a hint in there of regret but overall i get a feeling of contentment and acceptance of what she had experienced in life rather than what she hadnt, even though she acknowledges it. I feel as though she is looking from her death bed and just accepting what was of her life... admitting that she never had time to feel the full emotions of hate. Feeling that she had begun to dislike things but never had time to feel real hate and that was prob a positive but on the other hand she never had time to fully love either but is content with having shared love through her poetry.

I agree with my friend camoflage, that she seem s to be speaking mostly of regret. "I had no time to hate..." that's tellin' you she never hated anyone, which I highly doubt, everyone's hated someone they just haven't said anything, andher life "wasn't so ample" she didn't live an exciting life, well duh, do disrespect, but this lady pulled herself out of the world, to observe, and I think it's great to be dedicated to your poetry, but that's just boredering on obsessive. "had no time to love..." well, seems like she's writing this in her death bed or sumthin! She had plenty of time to love, everyone does, she just never reached out and grabbed it like she should, I like this, but the problems she says are troubling her are things that could hac=ve been easily avoided!

Doesn't it feel almost as if she came back from the grave to write this? I'm guessing by the way she's writing that this is near the time if her death. She seems to speak of regret. She hadn't a chance to hate for she was a forgiving person. and she had no time to love because she was so busy writing her poetry to fall truely in love. Doesn't it seem as if she's filled with regret the way she wrote this?Maybe she was near death. like I mentioned before. She talks of love and hate, serious emotions. She talks of never having the chance to feel theese things. Doesn't it sound like she's in her death bed, filled with regret, as she writes of her feelings?
