People that I meet and pass
In the city's broken roar,
Faces that I lose so soon
And have never found before,

Do you know how much you tell
In the meeting of our eyes,
How ashamed I am, and sad
To have pierced your poor disguise?

Secrets rushing without sound
Crying from your hiding places --
Let me go, I cannot bear
The sorrow of the passing faces.

-- People in the restless street,
Can it be, oh can it be
In the meeting of our eyes
That you know as much of me?

Well, it has feelings in her writing not so depressed.

This is not a very pleasant poem. This is obviously written by a woman suffering from severe depression. Her entire world is cast in a negative light as a result. In her hyper-sensitive state she sees through the diguise of those she passes on the street (what she percieves to be merely the brave faces they put on) and sees the suffering, sorrow and shame they endure. And she wonders if they too see right through her in return. It is noteworthy that she does not mention seeing anything positive or good in anyone including herself.

It is overly dramatic and self-pitying. She is taking upon her shoulders in true victim fashion the imagined suffering and pain of all those who she passes on the street. You cannot help but feel great empathy for the author and the emotional pain she must have been enduring at the time she wrote this.
