My Life had stood-a Loaded Gun Analysis

Author: Poetry of Emily Dickinson Type: Poetry Views: 2781

My Life had stood-a Loaded Gun-
In Corners-till a Day
The Owner passed-identified-
And carried Me away-And now We roam in Sovereign Woods-
And now We hunt the Doe-
And every time I speak for Him-
The Mountains straight reply-And do I smile, such cordial light
Upon the Valley glow-
It is as a Vesuvian face
Had let its pleasure through-And when at Night-Our good Day done-
I guard My Master's Head-
'Tis better than the Eider-Duck's
Deep Pillow-to have shared-To foe of His-I'm deadly foe-
None stir the second time-
On whom I lay a Yellow Eye-
Or an emphatic Thumb-Though I than He-may longer live
He longer must-than I-
For I have but the power to kill,
Without-the power to die-

Totally agree with the one upside. I think Emily justs gives the readers the chance or option to go deep inside that poem cause we can apply it to the all themes! Is the master/land owner/he that she mentioned God or her lover or just her father? She lets us have it our way!Cause every single option can be possible in some cases in our life.

The loaded gun is passion and its release. Your "cause," your love, your vocation, your belief. For Emily, maybe it was poetry itself ...

As well as the metaphor, Dickinson's "capitalisation" of every noun is indicative of her context but also emphatic- a complex example of personification too. It, along with the use of the extended metaphor allows an audience or any era to relate to the basic feelings of the poem through the objects and places as though they were people.

In true Dickinson style this poem is built around idea or technique of the extended metaphor. This gives the poem lasting relavence and understanding as it can be applied to all contexts, and audiences relate to the simplicity of the metaphor as a means for understanding the deeper (original) contextual meaning of the poem.
