She Walks In Beauty Analysis

She walks in beauty, like the night
     Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
     Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
     Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
     Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
     Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
     How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
     So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
     But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
     A heart whose love is innocent!

First paragraph/verses: On the surface he tells us of her physical beauty as he compares her to starry skies. Though he can only admire her in secrecy which is why he references the night. She is bright and extravagant in her nature which is why he describes her aspect as the best of dark and bright. Her heavenliness is so pure she doesn’t even belong to our gaudy world.
Second paragraph: The secret aspect of his admiration is impairing his view on her grace because he doesn’t feel right to think of her in that way. The light has been taken over by the dark which is his secret emotions as he says “one shade the more, one ray the less.” Her graceful black hair is one part of her graceful whole. She has pure, sweet and innocent thoughts; not yet tainted by the world nor does she let herself be tainted.
Third paragraph: She is calm and poise and she carries herself in a peaceful manner. She so pure it comes out in her demeanor and smile and beauty. He describes her as so innocent and pure and heavenly. She is simple yet perfect. Her mind is at peace and does not have troubles in her life.
Title: I think that the poet was not being literal while saying she walks in beauty. He means it to be deeper and not a physical description but an interior description. He means to tell about how her inner beauty comes out of her and flows into the hearts of the others she meets.
also the enjambment is truly masterful

It all depends on how you look at it. There is the respect a man is showing for a young woman who has incredible restraint and grace. He speaks about her inner beauty as if it were the most wonderful thing in the world. Byron is doing nothing more than capturing the essence of his cousin in a way that makes her seem more than life. A beautiful way to describe a person is through a poem, he just makes her even more beautiful. By telling us that her inner beauty is reflected by her outer shell is telling us that though she could be the most hideous creature alive her kindness and gentleness makes her more beautiful than the most beautiful woman in the world. This can be seen as a love poem for a member of one's family that has the strength and grace to go through life during a difficult time.
