The Kraken Analysis

Author: Poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson Type: Poetry Views: 785

Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides: above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant fins the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battering upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by men and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

This might be about the quietness then a sudden event (followed by death) in a person\'s life.

I think it is an expression of the poet\'s frustration regarding the uncertainty death. In the poem, we have this creature that sits in a deep, dark abyss. The kraken also lingers in a dreamless sleep. The only time that it gets to emerge from the deep, reach the surface, and see the light is when the world is ending. This is when the Kraken dies. I think the kraken is supposed to be a metaphor for us. Until we die, we really have no idea what is going to happen. We are just in a complete, abysmal darkeness, unable really know anything. Like the kraken, there is one moment when we are enlightened and can see the truth, but unfortunately, that only comes at the time when we die. This may not be what Alfred had in mind, but is how I see the poem. I hope it makes sense.

All of these interpretations are very interesting. I think it could be about the scientific discoveries that were going on at this time, and how these discoveries brought with them deep uncertainty and danger...the terrifying possibilities these discovers induce are threatening because they are unknown. And as science develops and develops these possibilities fester, until they erupt and science surpasses imagination and stagnates artistic creativity.

The Kraken is a great poem and you guys provided a good analysis of it. Does anyone know the meaning of this poem?

drop black wild eye in weed garden
leave moon flower between concrete fish
wander off for leaf harvest
whispering light shivers on ice wall
watch skin sleep on still waters
melt winter dandelion blossom
autumn thunder above
hot mushroom roof
see the purple rust

i believe the poem to be off oppressed feelings, feelings that one is too scared to emote as they are huge and once discoverd could end many and all relations

I do find interesting the idea that the Kraken is the proletariat, bidden to rise at some final time, but there's not enough imagery or symbolism to suggest that was his aim in the poem.
Some key features of the poem do include the broken sonnet and rhyme structure (all of it rhymes, but not in any order... denoting chaos, or madness, or at least some sort of rhythmic unpredictability, like the way the sea is); words that say or imply antiquity (ancient, millenial, the ages); words that say or imply mystery or secret (abysmal, lightless, secret cell), and some 3 or four lines that have a specific implication.
"Below the thunders of the upper deep"
This is the area of intense activity, where everything is obvious.
"(away) From many a wondrous grot and secret cell"
The Kraken dwells even away from secret and wondrous areas.
"enormous polypi" and "huge seaworms"
The Kraken sleeps among bloated, gross, and unthinking creatures.
"Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;"
What is the "latter fire" the later fire? The last fire? The fire that is the end times? Or is this a specific apocalyptic event that Tennyson envisions?
"In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die"
The Kraken will rise once in fury that all will note (everyone, everywhere, even the angels). It will die there. Or it's fury will die there.
With all these elements, I side with the belief of a sleeping demon in the mind. There's the layer of obvious activity which is everyday speech, thought, and personality which everyone can see. Then there's the deep and secret parts that may hold uniqueness and wonderment were someone to plumb those depths. But then, at the basest darkest level is some giant horror. Insanity? Likely. The narrator fears it to be the end of all things. It could even be murderous insanity. Someone who snaps and kills until killed, being so horrible and violent that everyone takes note.

Fabulous poem about what is hidden, fearful, and secret. I use it with my Grade Four class. The early explorers believed in the kraken. But it wasn't squid. It had a large round shell, numerous tentaculi, and it killed it's prey with its putrid excrement. See pontipidian for more.

"The Kraken" clearly illustrates the Scandanavian myhthology which enables the reader to recognise the legendary aspect of the poem. The Kraken is an irregular sonnet, the fact that Tennyson has refused to portray his perosnal account of love displays that he disagrees with the ideas of a sonnet and within a glance at the poem the reader ackowledges that Tennyson has challenged the scheme of a sonnet but by means of subversion Tennyson uses the 15 lines as a scaffold to create a sense of befuddlement which encourages an inquiring mind which enables the poem to remain in the forefront of the mind even after the reader has parted from the poem

One interpretation that I have come up with (although I also really like the mental illness, Reckoning, and industrial revolution interpretations) is that the Kraken represents all of the great and powerful things we are all capable of doing but keep locked away in the dark recesses of possibility, and the lines "Until the later fire shall heat the deep/ Then once by man and angels to be seen/ In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die" refer to the recognition of what we could (should) have done only when it is forever too late

I am of the opinion that The Kraken is indeed refering to the industrialisation of england. The kraken could be symbolic of the oppressed working class society and the sea could be seen as a personification of the middle-upper class faction of society that weigh it down. The main focus of the poem is the working class society are under going social unrest that will at some stage come to a head like that of the french revolution. The poem finds interesting connections with Thomas Carlyle's Past and Present. This is only one interpretation of this poem and all the above can ring true at some levels. I particulaly like the one refering to one's inner demons surfacing on judgement day.

its obviously about industrialization in Great Britain.

I also believe that Tennyson uses this poem to release his feelings. This i think could be due to his chiled hood. His farther was a drunk and insane and his brothers addicted to opiem and theft. What would your feelings say? .

It's about the inner evil people choose not to show otheres. We keep it hidden inside, away from everyone. it sleeps, and festers (eBattering upon huge seaworms in his sleep) until judgement day (the fires), it will be displayed to all. Angels. Humans. God. You will not be able to hide those sick thoughts - you will not be able to lie to others (or, in many cases, yourself)

its showing htat the kraken has been awoken due to human distubance and has been lured to the surface to be killed.

| Posted on 2009-06-27 | by a guest

.: :.

The poem is talking about a sea monster, that lives at the vey bottom of the sea. It destroys ships. When the monster reaches the surface, it dies. This is the first time the monster sees people and the first time the people see it. This happens at the end of time

its obviously a giant squid. dunno about the last three lines though...

The kracken is Alfred's own thoughts and feelings. Personally, i don't agree with them.

It could also be interpreted as a metaphor for Tennyson's life long fear of mental illness, gurgling away under the sea then bursting up out of the surface.
