To a Common Prostitute

BE composed--be at ease with me--I am Walt Whitman, liberal and lusty
as Nature;
Not till the sun excludes you, do I exclude you;
Not till the waters refuse to glisten for you, and the leaves to
rustle for you, do my words refuse to glisten and rustle for
you.

My girl, I appoint with you an appointment--and I charge you that you
make preparation to be worthy to meet me,
And I charge you that you be patient and perfect till I come.

Till then, I salute you with a significant look, that you do not
forget me.

If ever there is a poem that on its surface seems self-explanitory, it is this brief poem, that seems straight out a statement that a prostititue is a human too. Though it is not that simple. Whitman adopts an intriguing lordly manner, almost that of one exercising a droit de signeur: "My girl, I appoint with you an appointment. . . " and yet there is another side, and that is that he is also comparing the prostitute to a poet, and her work a craft, even a poem. And with it he give the reader a glimpse into the work an labor of making a poem, "BE composed--be at ease with me," and yet for it all this is also a man nervious with his malemness begging as it were this street woman to treat him like a lover, in essense to create a work of art with her sexuality. It is an amzing piece on several levels. One needs to look at the resonance.
