Music, When Soft Voices Die Analysis

Author: poem of Percy Bysshe Shelley Type: poem Views: 20

Music, when soft voices die,

Vibrates in the memory --

Odours, when sweet violets sicken,

Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,

Are heaped for the beloved's bed;

And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,

Love itself shall slumber on.

Shelley almost creates the idea that absence sharpens love; the physical distance intensifies the love, but imagination brings them close- so that these separated souls can once again be united but in the mind.

Music, when soft voices die can\'t be in memory of Percy Shelley\'s wife, because she died in 1851, 30 years after he wrote this poem.

Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote this poem in the memory of his wife. He\'s saying that the does not need to listen to music as the soft voices of...umm..i guess his wife will always echo in his memory. He then says that whenever he smell the sweet violets he can immediately recall all those memories of the first time he had ever smelt the violet. When the rose withers it\'s petals still have their scent and there\'s a pile of roses on his beloved graves. So it\'s been a long time since his beloved has died. But her memory and love shall live as long as he\'s alive. -Hope it helps :)

This is a poem from the Romantic Period. Percy Bysshe Shelley is one of the most well regarded and renown poets throughout history. Contrary to most believes, romantic poems do not necessarily have to be about love. Some characteristics include idealism, close observations or sensitivity to the world and rebellion against the impermanence of things. As with this poem, it obviously describes memories and how memories manage to transcend this materialistic world and to last forever. Coincidentally, this poem also mentions about love, and compares the commonly used symbol for passion, the rose, to his lover. Rose petals, when removed from the plant itself, withers and dies off quickly. He hints at this kind of impermanence, yet still emphasizes that memory of this love will "slumber on".
Hope the above has helped readers to understand the poem a little more. :)

This poem speaks the truth about when things dissapear or die, they are ingraved into your memory. Even if the physical thing is gone, the memory of it reamains forever.
