Water Analysis

If I were called in

To construct a religion

I should make use of water.

Going to church

Would entail a fording

To dry, different clothes;

My litany would employ

Images of sousing,

A furious devout drench,

And I should raise in the east

A glass of water

Where any-angled light

Would congregate endlessly.

Larkin explores the necessity of religion through the metaphor of water, it is universal, similar to that of water, and to some is essential to life, God being the reason we are here today.

My interpretation of the poem for A level:
When Larkin says \'If i were called in\', implies that religion is so constructed that anyone could be called in on a whim to create oe, and he \'should\' like other religions make a point of using water. It is what binds all religions and of course what we as human beings need as our most basic need.
Larkin says that instead of going to church, in his religion you would cross a river to dry your clothes. Another example of Larkin\'s subtle humour that makes a huge statement about the contradictions within religion?
And Larkin\'s public worship would contain plunging into water and devotedly getting drenched all in the name of your religion. (Alternativaly sousing could imply searching for water in the desert, impossible we know) Is this Larkin\'s sarcasm once again? Poking fun at baptism and other religious acts? To me it conjures images of a \'furious\', \'devoted\', religious water fight!
And what he means by east is that all religions come from the east, eg Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam etc. so surely it would be wrong for him to make up his religion from the west?

Larkin is clealy combining literary techniques to disguise his ebullient nature. Moreover Larkin had a great childhood where he particpated in happy slapping and drug dealing.
Hope this helps

.: Analysis :.

Larkin presents a look of different paths of light. This is a certain type of religious view. This poem is both hyperbolic and deflationary at the same time. He uses traditional christian elements and fuses them together. They are stock judeo chrisitan elements all starting from a subjective position.
