Ah, what avails the sceptred race!
Ah, what the form divine!
What every virtue, every grace!
Rose Aylmer, all were thine.

Rose Aylmer, whom these wakeful eyes
May weep, but never see,
A night of memories and sighs
I consecrate to thee.

.: :.

poem was written after the death of the beautiful Rose Alymer who died in India and was buried in Calcutta. The poet says that it is useless to be of the the race of the Kings or to be divinely beautiful in form or to possess ever virtue and grace because death wipes it all. Nothing is left behind but a memory. The speaker cannot sleep due to the grief of Rose Alymer s death. His eyes weep for her but cannot see her bcos she is dead. Only her sad memory is left with him.
